ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) Software

Manufacturing was the original spawning ground of MRP and MRP II which later evolved into the now ubiquitous ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) that we find in virtually every type of corporate entity.

ERP has evolved from a technique to plan dependent demand materials (“Material Requirements Planning” or “MRP”) in the seventies via a coherent set of best practices to plan and control the resources in a manufacturing concern (“MRPII”) in the eighties to “Enterprise Resource Planning” (ERP) software systems in the nineties. Nowadays, ERP is seen as an integrated computer system that powers the business processes of any business, not just manufacturing, via embedded best practices and a unified database.

ERP Software Functionality

Integrated Information
  • Integrates information across all departments
  • Allows users to input data in one location that can be processed with other data and accessed as informational reports in real-time
Flow of Information

  • Functions: manufacturing, finance, HR, sales and distribution, material management, logistics
  • Processes: order entry, reporting, receiving, shipping, accounting
Plan Events
  • Plans future events
Track Events
  • Tracks a wide range of events in the enterprise in an integrated fashion
Analyze Events
  • Supports analysis of trends, to improve the performance of the enterprise.
NINE ERP Software Components

There are many different ERP software systems on the market and each is configured differently in terms of modules and major elements. We present the following nine components as characteristic of any modern ERP system:
  1. Financials & Accounting Software
  2. Human Resources
  3. Sale and Distribution
  4. Manufacturing
  5. Materials Management
  6. Logistics
  7. Reporting
  8. Business Rules
  9. Workflow

SYSPRO Software Foundation of Confectioner's Recall Plan

Chocolate Potpourri Product Recall Plan Leverages SYSPRO Software Functionalities .

COSTA MESA, Calif., Sep 10, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SYSPRO, a provider of visionary ERP for the manufacturing pragmatist, has announced that its software is the foundation of a comprehensive product recall plan in place at Glenview, Ill.-based chocolate maker, Chocolate Potpourri.

Winner of numerous industry awards for its effective utilization of SYSPRO enterprise software, Chocolate Potpourri said it has established a product recall plan that fully leverages the extensive traceability and tracking capabilities inherent in SYSPRO software. Chocolate Potpourri's plan makes full use of these functionalities to trace product ingredients from origin, through the manufacturing process, to their ultimate destination, fully maintaining assurance certification and tracking expiration dates.

Using SYSPRO ERP queries, Chocolate Potpourri's recall team has the ability to locate the supplier of the suspect ingredients, the supplier production lots and the dates received. The team can call up the jobs to which the ingredients were issued, determine which customers had purchased the resulting products and issue a product recall, when required by governmental authorities.

According to Richard Gordon, president of Chocolate Potpourri, "SYSPRO ERP software not only enables us to compete successfully with the largest confectioners in the industry, but also to safeguard our customers and the public in the event of the recall of an ingredient."

Joey Benadretti, president of SYSPRO USA, adds, "SYSPRO has been on the forefront of providing greater visibility and control over quality and tracking in industries like medical devices, pharmaceuticals and food. In fact, SYSPRO software facilitates full compliance with the more stringent food recall standards being proposed by Congress."

SYSPRO's more thoughtful approach to adopting new technology also reflects the desires of its buyers who are driven by business needs and not by the latest headlines. This exemplifies SYSPRO's ongoing strategy of helping to simplify the success of its customers. SYSPRO calls its buyer landscape "PragmaVision,"(TM) consisting of pragmatic, visionary ERP executives that are driven by a desire for smart, but aggressive market growth.

How to Embrace CRM and Make it Succeed in Your Organization

If you ask technology gurus for a definition of CRM, you will probably get many different answers. Today, CRM systems typically refer to comprehensive software solutions that, in effect, make the customer the epicenter of the business. CRM software systems not only empower companies to manage effective relationships, but they do much more. A CRM software solution enables companies to collect, maintain and manipulate customer-related data by leveraging customer relationships to increase revenue and profitability.

CRM is growing in importance as a valuable competitive tool. However, a successful CRM solution must take many factors into consideration, including a well-defined implementation strategy, the people factor and the need for integration with the incumbent ERP solution.

In embracing CRM, the following are critical guidelines:
  • CRM should be embraced as a competitive tool
  • CRM needs to be driven by a customer-centric business strategy and philosophy
  • A business needs to take ownership of its customer-centric information
  • Successful CRM requires an evolutionary approach that focuses on people
  • CRM must be looked on as an enterprise-wide solution since an integrated approach is a must for CRM to extend beyond the customer into the entire enterprise

  • Employees and suppliers must be incorporated as part of a holistic approach to Relationship Management throughout the Enterprise and Supply Chain
  • True 360° visibility starts from within and extends externally across customers, vendors and distribution network

If these guidelines are adhered to, the chances of gaining substantial benefits of CRM can be readily realized. The result is a dramatic impact on the business, especially with regard to internal processes, customer satisfaction and company profitability. CRM can provide the 360° visibility necessary to win in this challenging, highly competitive business environment.

SYSPRO brings new flexibility to Orthoplastics

High-performance medical plastics manufacturer Orthoplastics has gone live a month ahead of schedule and under budget with a new SYSPRO enterprise system from K3 Business Technology Group (K3). Orthoplastics was completely committed to the success of the project and therefore ensured resources were available to get the job done in order to take early ownership of the system.

The fully integrated solution replaces the company's old legacy in-house developed DOS system. This was augmented with spreadsheets and was prone to duplication and errors. With SYSPRO Orthoplastics gains full visibility of accurate business critical data from a centralised dynamic system.

The Lancashire-based company supplies the world's highest quality, premium-grade orthopaedic UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) to the medical industry. The material is used in the manufacture of orthopaedic implants such as artificial joints and is supplied as custom-engineered rods and sheets. In addition the company can supply material in various sizes and in blocks. Its purpose-built, high-speed machines can reduce customer costs by tailoring the shape of the rod or block to optimum size for the component to be machined.

To stay ahead of the market Orthoplastics needed to optimise its business processes. It had identified several issues with its non-dynamic legacy system. These included no real-time scheduling, laborious data entry that was often duplicated, and restricted visibility to information that required the review of many different individual sources. This made management reporting very difficult and information analysis was fraught with hurdles. The system also lacked the ability for expansion and could not support standardized, streamlined processes.

Orthoplastics' SYSPRO system includes all the modules it requires for a fully dynamic solution to its historical problems. These modules provide full and instantaneous control of System Administration, Finance, Distribution and Manufacturing. The new system improves visibility of order and production progress and makes it easier for Orthoplastics to meet contractual delivery agreements and boosts its delivery performance. In addition the company can now manage by exception, gain higher levels of reporting and analysis and speed up its order processing.

"Orthoplastics is an exceptional company requiring an equally exceptional solution to its needs. K3 has carefully tailored this SYSPRO solution to eradicate its immediate issues and give the company the flexibility and support it needs to take the business forward. Our experience of medical manufacturers shows that full visibility of the business is extremely important. Companies such as Orthoplastics are generally lean operations but they often lack easy access to dynamic information. This can affect all areas of the business. With our ability to tailor SYSPRO to the exact requirements of the medical industry we can deliver solutions based on proven out of the box software that fit the precise needs of the business," said Howard Joseph, MD, K3 Business Technology Group.

About K3 Business Technology Group
